Internationally renowned beatboxer and sound artist Jason Singh arrives in the historic port of Leith to perform his beautifully atmospheric live vocal score to John Grierson’s groundbreaking 1929 silent herring fishing film DRIFTERS as part of a major UK tour to fishing ports on the UK’s East coast.
Screening alongside DRIFTERS in this special event will be rare archive films of Leith dating from 1918 accompanied live by Leith-based female singing collective Davno. The group’s ethereal arrangements of traditional songs from Poland, Russia and Ukraine celebrate the port’s international community and complement Jason’s semi-improvised soundtrack to present an exhilarating cinematic experience.
This special event takes place in Destiny Church Leith – originally built as a Turkish bath in the mid-19th century before being converted into a cinema and still maintains one of the last remaining plaster cinema screens in Europe.
LeithLate is an arts organisation responsible for a number of public art initiatives in the Leith area dedicated to Edinburgh’s port history and vivid creative life including The Shutter Project and The Mural Project, alongside the annual LeithLate festival.
